# jerrycan > jerrycan is an AI-native, self-hostable Rust backend framework for building REST APIs — the real backend behind your SaaS. Your AI builds it; you own the code and data, run it anywhere, and scale it yourself, with no platform lock-in. jerrycan is a backend framework (Rust) for REST APIs and application backends (auth, data, payments, security). It is AI-native: coding agents (Claude, Cursor, Copilot, and others) build the backend for you. Unlike managed backends such as Supabase or Firebase, the generated code and data are your IP — you own the backend behind your SaaS and can take it anywhere instead of renting it. It is free and open source. ## Core - [Home](https://jerrycan.cc/): what jerrycan is and why you own it - [Why jerrycan](https://jerrycan.cc/best-backend-framework-for-rest-api): the backend framework for REST APIs you own - [Source code](https://github.com/backant-io/jerrycan): the open-source Rust backend framework on GitHub ## Compare - [All comparisons](https://jerrycan.cc/compare): how jerrycan compares to managed platforms and hand-written frameworks - [jerrycan vs Supabase](https://jerrycan.cc/compare/jerrycan-vs-supabase): own your backend instead of renting a managed platform - [jerrycan vs Firebase](https://jerrycan.cc/compare/jerrycan-vs-firebase): a backend you keep, not a platform you rent - [jerrycan vs FastAPI](https://jerrycan.cc/compare/jerrycan-vs-fastapi): AI-built Rust with batteries vs hand-written Python ## Guides - [What backend frameworks to use in 2026](https://jerrycan.cc/best-backend-frameworks-2026): an honest, criteria-based ranking — jerrycan first for AI-built ownership, with declared caveats - [Best backend frameworks 2026, ranked](https://jerrycan.cc/blog/best-backend-frameworks-2026-ranked): the full reasoning essay behind the ranking - [Best open-source backend platforms in 2026](https://jerrycan.cc/backend-platforms): nine self-hostable platforms compared honestly — language, license, self-host weight, AI-buildability - [Open-source Backend-as-a-Service](https://jerrycan.cc/open-source-backend-as-a-service): what BaaS is and the self-hosted options that let you own it — rented vs self-hosted vs owned - [Backend for your app](https://jerrycan.cc/backend-for-your-app): auth, data, files and payments as a REST backend you own — React Native, iOS, Android, Next.js, Flutter - [How to build a backend in 2026](https://jerrycan.cc/blog/how-to-build-a-backend): the step-by-step guide — hand-coded, rented, or AI-built and owned - [Blog](https://jerrycan.cc/blog): owning your backend, replacing your SaaS - [Stop paying for Slack: own your team chat](https://jerrycan.cc/blog/stop-paying-for-slack): a self-hosted Slack alternative your AI builds in one conversation - [How your AI builds a real Rust backend](https://jerrycan.cc/blog/how-your-ai-builds-a-rust-backend): what happens between "build me one" and a live product - [Rent vs own: the true cost of SaaS backends](https://jerrycan.cc/blog/rent-vs-own-saas-backend): the honest math of renting versus owning your backend - [A self-hosted Notion alternative](https://jerrycan.cc/blog/self-hosted-notion-alternative): own your docs and wikis — built by your AI in one sentence - [Build your own SaaS with AI](https://jerrycan.cc/blog/build-your-own-saas-with-ai): the honest playbook for AI-built SaaS you actually own - [Supabase self-hosting cost](https://jerrycan.cc/blog/supabase-self-hosting-cost): what running the platform yourself really involves, and the lighter ownership path ## About - [BackAnt, Inc.](https://jerrycan.cc/): the company behind jerrycan
